Target note

Full name: Dopamine transporter (DAT, SLC6A3)
Nature: Dopamine reuptake protein on nigrostriatal presynaptic terminals.
Normal expression: Striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen).
Value: Distinguishing a degenerative parkinsonian syndrome from essential tremor or drug-induced parkinsonism; dementia with Lewy bodies.
Approaches: SPECT: [123I]ioflupane (DaTscan); PET: [18F]FE-PE2I, [18F]LBT-999.
Indications explored: Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, dementia with Lewy bodies.
Points of caution: Drug interactions (bupropion, amphetamines, some antidepressants); thyroid blocking needed with ¹²³I.
