Target note

Full name: Bone remodelling (hydroxyapatite)
Nature: Binding to the forming mineral matrix, in proportion to blood flow and osteoblastic activity.
Normal expression: Whole skeleton.
Value: Detection of bone metastases and benign lesions (fractures, osteomyelitis).
Approaches: PET: [18F]NaF; SPECT: [99mTc] bisphosphonates (MDP, HDP).
Indications explored: Bone metastases (prostate, breast), musculoskeletal disease; [18F]NaF in coronary and aortic plaques.
Points of caution: Not very specific: osteoarthritis, fractures and post-treatment changes also take up the tracer.
